Eureka's Endangered Wolf Center Featured on National Wildlife Series

Celebrating over 50 years of conservation, the center's efforts spotlighted in 'Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom: Protecting the Wild'

Nestled in the serene hills of Eureka, Missouri, the Endangered Wolf Center has long been a beacon of hope for some of the world's most imperiled canid species. This Saturday, the center's groundbreaking conservation work will be showcased on the national stage in an episode of 'Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom: Protecting the Wild.'

Founded in 1971 by the renowned zoologist Marlin Perkins—the original host of 'Wild Kingdom'—and his wife, Carol Perkins, the center has been at the forefront of efforts to rescue species like the Mexican wolf and the American red wolf from the brink of extinction. Today, every Mexican wolf roaming the wild can trace its lineage back to this sanctuary.

In the upcoming episode, co-hosts Dr. Rae Wynn-Grant and Peter Gros delve into the center's innovative conservation strategies. They participate in a health checkup for a new litter of red wolf pups—the most endangered wolves globally—and explore the center's role in the broader ecosystem. Dr. Wynn-Grant emphasizes the center's significance, stating, "It's not an exaggeration that the future of wolves in North America might depend on the future of this place."

The episode also highlights the center's use of cross-fostering, a technique where captive-born pups are placed with wild wolf litters to enhance genetic diversity and survival rates. This method has been pivotal in bolstering the Mexican wolf population, which now numbers nearly 300 in the wild—a remarkable recovery from just seven known individuals.

Beyond Mexican and red wolves, the center is home to other endangered species, including the African painted dog and the maned wolf. Each species benefits from the center's dedicated conservation programs and public education initiatives.

For those inspired to support or experience the center's mission firsthand, several events are on the horizon. The annual Wolf Fest is scheduled for Saturday, October 17, 2026, offering a family-friendly day filled with animal tours, live music, and educational activities. Additionally, the center hosts Evening Wolf Howls on most Fridays and Saturdays, providing a unique opportunity to hear wolves vocalize at sunset.

The episode featuring the Endangered Wolf Center will air this Saturday, October 11, at 8:30 a.m. Viewers can tune in to witness the center's unwavering commitment to wildlife conservation and the enduring legacy of Marlin Perkins.
