Eureka's 'Goldilocks Approach' to Flood Mitigation Nears Completion

A major flood mitigation project in Eureka, Missouri is nearing completion, aiming to shield residents and businesses from destructive flash floods and river overflows.

Mayor Sean Flower calls the strategy a “Goldilocks approach,” designed to redirect floodwaters just enough to protect key areas without creating new problems elsewhere.

Construction crews are finalizing two crucial floodwalls—one safeguarding the wastewater treatment plant from Forby Creek, and another protecting Old Town’s bustling business district from Flat Creek flooding, often driven by rising Meramec River levels.

Local business owner Janet Wecker Frisch feels relief, recalling past floods that threatened her studios but now sees hope for fewer incidents.

Past floods in 2015 and 2017 tested the city’s resilience, yet new protective measures—and cooperation from property owners—offer fresh optimism.

Funded by Proposition E sales tax and a state grant, Eureka’s balanced plan promises greater peace of mind for the whole community.

Eureka's Endangered Wolf Center Featured on National Wildlife Series

Nestled in the scenic hills of Eureka, Missouri, the Endangered Wolf Center stands as a crucial sanctuary for some of the world's rarest canids.

This weekend, the center’s vital conservation efforts will shine nationwide during an episode of ‘Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom: Protecting the Wild.’

Founded in 1971 by the iconic Marlin Perkins and his wife, Carol Perkins, the center is renowned for saving the Mexican wolf and American red wolf from extinction.

Hosts Dr. Rae Wynn-Grant and Peter Gros will showcase critical programs like cross-fostering, helping the wild Mexican wolf population rise from just seven to nearly 300 today.

Beyond its impact, the sanctuary also protects species such as the African painted dog and maned wolf, while educating and engaging the public through events like Wolf Fest and Evening Wolf Howls.

This episode airs Saturday, October 11, at 8:30 a.m., highlighting the center’s irreplaceable role in wildlife recovery.
